How to check TikTok caption readability.
Captions should support the video, not compete with it. Reviewing them on a phone helps you catch text that is too small, too fast, too busy, or too close to an interface edge.
Read captions at normal viewing size.
Do not judge on-screen text only from an editing timeline or large monitor. Watch the exported draft on a phone and check whether the words can be understood quickly while the video is moving.
Keep each moment easy to scan.
- Use enough contrast between text and the footage behind it.
- Break long thoughts into short, readable lines.
- Give viewers enough time to read before the next caption appears.
- Avoid placing essential text where it competes with a face, product, or action.
Check placement across the whole draft.
A caption may look fine in one scene and disappear into a bright, busy, or fast-moving shot in the next. Review every caption moment, especially when the background changes.
Make the smallest useful edit.
When a caption is difficult to follow, change one thing first: simplify the wording, increase contrast, move it, or give it more time. Then replay that moment in context.
